7 Signs Your Cam Belt Is Failing (and What to Do)

A worn cam belt rarely announces itself — but sometimes there are clues. Here are the warning signs to look and listen for, and what to do if you spot any of them.
1. Ticking noise from the engine
A ticking or tapping sound from the front of the engine can point to a worn belt or a failing tensioner or pulley.
2. Engine misfires or rough running
If the belt has stretched or slipped a tooth, the engine timing can be thrown out, causing misfires, rough idling or a loss of power.
3. Engine won't start
If the engine cranks but won't fire, the cam belt may already have broken. Don't keep trying to start it — call a mechanic.
4. Oil leaking near the belt
Oil from a leaking seal can soak into the belt and make the rubber break down much faster.
5. Visible cracks, glazing or missing teeth
If the belt can be inspected, look for cracks, fraying, a shiny glazed surface or teeth that are worn or missing.
6. Whining from the water pump
On many engines the water pump is driven by the cam belt. A whining pump or coolant leak can be an early sign of trouble for the belt too.
7. You're past the service interval
The most reliable sign of all. Most manufacturers recommend a change every 4–10 years or 40,000–100,000 miles. No record of a change in the service history? Treat it as overdue.
